Scott Hinton Announces Plans for Retirement as Head of Companion Life

COLUMBIA, SC—Scott Hinton, president of Companion Life since 2007, has announced his plans to retire at the end of 2016. To ensure a seamless transition and to reinforce the strength and stability of the organization, it was also announced that Philip Gardham, previous vice president for specialty markets, has been promoted immediately to chief operating officer, and effective Jan. 1, 2017, will become president of Companion Life. Working closely with Hinton during the past decade, Gardham has been instrumental in helping diversify the company’s portfolio of businesses.

Under Hinton’s leadership Companion Life has grown significantly in both revenue and profitability.  During his tenure the organization purchased and integrated nine companies, which expanded markets to now include business in 49 states.

Additional changes to the organizational structure, intended to strengthen competitiveness, were also announced. With an eye toward enhanced business partner support, current senior staff for core and specialty markets will report directly to Gardham as well as the sales and marketing of these two areas. To lead these areas, Jon Anderson was promoted to chief operating officer of specialty markets, and Mark Smidt was promoted to vice president of specialty markets.

Hinton will oversee the company’s reorganization and transition.
